The “ELMO” is the focal point the St. Elmo Historical Society has chosen to promote the arts and achievements of our rural community, creating a forum for self expression and debate.
The Movie theater, in the early 20th century was a vital link to the heartland. At a time when radio and newsprint were the daily means of communication, the movie theaters spun newsreels and Hollywood wove her magic into the hearts of everyone who loaded up the family for the Saturday matinee. The institution gave generations hope through the depression, united us with Franklin D. Roosevelt through the second world war, inspired us as John F. Kennedy pressed onward into space, and watched as Martin Luther King Jr. announced his dream to the world.
This is not a project to restore some plaster and a projector flickering 24 frames each second, but an aim to restore the feeling of community, the fabric of the heartland, and the spirit of America. The performing arts, music, and education are at the core of a society that has evolved beyond the daily struggle of mere existence. It is our goal to inspire the youth to strive for excellence in every aspect of there lives, to work with purpose, taking pride in their achievements, and to broaden their outlook of countless opportunities. Programs and activities the Society intends to promote:
Performing Arts Concerts Recitals Seminars Charity Events Community Celebrations Educational Activities for local schools Theatre Institutes and youth camps Rental for private events Post Prom Activities Movies to sustain the above projects
